What is fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia sufferer's have several things in common, including: widespread achy muscle pain, fatigue, insomnia, and "fibro fog." Even with these similarities it is not the same for every individual that is given this diagnosis, or "label" if you will. I have worked with hundreds of fibromyalgia patients and the one thing they all had in common was…they were all different.
Now don't get me wrong, these symptoms are REAL. Those that get diagnosed with fibromyalgia suffer in ways that most could never comprehend. Their fight seems never-ending, and those that are closest to them, can't grasp, can't comprehend, their daily struggle and pain. On the outside they look "normal". It appears they should have no problems at all, but they hurt all over, can't sleep, and are often unable to get words out or perform at the same level mentally because their brain seems "cloudy" or "foggy".
Being misunderstanding is and everyday reality for a fibromyalgia sufferer. But what is wrong? Why do they have these symptoms? The unfortunate truth is that many doctors give a fibromyalgia diagnosis when they felt like they have done all the investigation they can, or they just don't want to go any farther with the patient, period.
We know fibromyalgia patients have a neurological problem. The research has shown that time and time again. That is why Brain Based Rehabilitation (also called Brain Based Therapy) is such a huge part of my fibromyalgia treatment program. We can apply the principles of brain plasticity and make amazing changes in symptoms and brain function.
The astute doctor will look even farther. Many things can contribute to the neurological problem. Things like immune dysfunction, gastrointestinal dysfunction, hormone imbalances, intestinal dysbiosis, candida, among other things. Success with fibromyalgia treatment, depends on stepping back and looking at the big picture.
So although fibromyalgia is a label some doctors give to patients that simply means there is nothing else they can do. To me, to us at the Boydston Institute, it means there is definitely something wrong, and we work hard to get to the root of the problem. Of course it helps that we are looking for the right things.
I see changes in fibromyalgia patients that are nothing short of amazing. Our fibromyalgia treatment success, our ability to take someone in chronic pain, who may have lost some hope, and guide them back to health… that is why I get out of bed each morning. It is what makes the years of study and work all worth it. Having a fibromyalgia patient tell me how much I changed their life… their is nothing quite like it. I hope you are the next person I hear that from.
