One of the best analogies or metaphors to use to explain the functional disconnection syndrome (brain imbalance in fibromyalgia) is this:  think of it like a marching band.  When both sides of the brain are working together, and they’re strong, and they’re in tune, and they’re in sync; you’ve got a marching band…or it’s like an orchestra.  Everything sounds great.  It sounds very pleasing.  But what happens if the trumpets decide that they’re going to play a half a beat off?  It’s not going to sound right. 

That’s what’s going on in the brain of a fibromyalgia patient.  When the brain is functioning properly, we get a very orchestral, beautiful function…but if just one section starts to play off tune or out of sync, then things get thrown out of time and we get all sorts of symptoms like pain, tenderness, fatigue, memory loss, rapid heartbeat, headaches, Irritable bowel, hormone imbalances…and more.

The newest scientific findings also talk about “central sensitization.” One of the reasons that you hurt more than other people is that your brain and nervous system have become “sensitized.” Here’s what that means, let’s use a math example.

Normally, 1+1= 2, right? But in the brain of someone suffering with fibromyalgia symptoms, 1+1=10.  Your brain perceives pain more than it should. And for some people it’s so bad that 1+0=10. It takes almost no stimulation for them to feel pain.

Because the root of the problem lies in brain malfunction then the treatment needs to address the functional issues with the brain. Drugs, medications, a million massages, etc. are not going to change the underlying problem.
